They were one of the oldest civilisations, and they survived that way only because they were so incredibly clever. They had kept to the shadows for so many generations, the youngest 'reed' (their word for children) born with upside-down facial features. They believed that the expression of emotion was a private thing, and that to break that rule would be similar to exposing themselves naked.
